Billards expressions and definitions

Run the mouse over the parts of the billiard table for an explanatory text.

Pockets

A billard table has six pockets, in which the billard balls can be sunk.

Solids and Stripes

Solids refers to balls numbered 1 through 7 (but not the 8). Stripes refer to balls numbered 9-15.

Cue

The cue is the stick that is used to strike the white cue ball.

The Cue Ball

Only the white ball can be struck by the cue. That’s why it is called the cue ball.

Colored balls (object balls)

All balls other than the White and the 8-Ball.

Head Spot

The spot in which the white ball is placed at the start of the game.

Head of the Table

The side of the table in which the break is preformed.

Foot Spot

The spot at the foot end of the table where the first ball is racked.

Aufnahme bzw. aufnahmeberechtigt

Während seiner Aufnahme ist der Spieler an der Reihe. Nach dem Ende der Aufnahme kommt der nächste Spieler an die Reihe.

Cue Ball in Hand

The player can place the white ball anywhere on the table.

Cue Ball in Hand -- Behind the Head String

The player can place the white ball anywhere in the head of the table. The white ball cannot be in contact with a colored ball.

Color of Choice

The player can chose the group of balls before the shot.
